An anchor doesn't hold because it's heavy. It holds because it digs in — and it can only dig if the pull comes in low and flat along the bottom. The chain, the arithmetic, and the six steps below all exist to make that happen.
The short answer: Anchor from the bow, into the wind. Lower — never throw — the anchor, pay out about 7 feet of line for every foot of depth measured from your bow cleat (in 8 feet of water, plan on ~70 feet), set it with gentle reverse, and line up two landmarks before you relax.
What's on the end of your anchor line
A rode that holds is a five-part system: anchor, shackle, a length of chain, a second shackle, and nylon anchor line running up to a bow cleat. The chain's weight sags the rode into a low curve, so the last few feet of pull arrive parallel to the bottom — the anchor gets dragged along the seabed and into it, not lifted up off it. Chain also takes the chafe where the rode meets the bottom, while the nylon line stretches to absorb gusts and wave shock instead of jerking the anchor loose.

Fluke anchors are the most chain-dependent family — their holding is all dig-in — and Greenfield's selection chart recommends a 4-foot length of 1/4-inch coated chain with every slip-ring fluke anchor. How much anchor line should you let out?
About 7 feet of line for every foot of depth — and depth counts from your bow cleat, not the water's surface. In 8 feet of water with a 2-foot bow height you're anchoring in 10 feet, so plan on roughly 70 feet of line. Boaters call this ratio scope, and it's the single number that decides whether you hold: short-lining an anchor pulls it upward and drags it. Give it room, and it sets harder the more the wind pushes you.
Scope matters most with fluke anchors, which hold entirely by digging in — plan the full 7:1. River and mushroom anchors, whose cast weight does part of the work, hold at 5:1 for short fair-weather stops; a Richter is designed for 4:1 — the least line in the family. A 100-foot rode covers 7:1 out to roughly 12 feet cleat-to-bottom — which is why a complete kit carries 100 feet of line, not a courtesy coil. Figure scope for the depth at high tide, because a rising tide silently shrinks your ratio, and let out more when wind or current builds; conditions matter as much as depth.
How to set an anchor in six steps
The set starts before the anchor gets wet — and before anything goes overboard, tie the bitter end of the line to a bow cleat.

Pick your spot
Sand or mud if you can find it; that's where flukes bury. Check the depth, then leave a full swing circle between you and other boats, rocks, and shore. Two minutes of touring beats twenty of re-anchoring.

Head into whichever is pushing your boat harder, and stop where you want the anchor to end up — not the boat. You'll fall back by the length of your scope.

Lower — don't throw — the anchor
A thrown anchor tangles its own rode around the flukes and lands fouled or upside down, and a fouled anchor never sets. Ease it down until it touches bottom.

With a third of the line out, tug it to feel whether the anchor has bitten, then keep paying out to your full scope. Count the line as it goes — guessing is how 70 feet becomes 30.

Set it with gentle reverse
Idle reverse, let the rode straighten, and watch the line. A set anchor snubs the boat still; a dragging one thrums and skips. A properly scoped fluke buries deeper the harder it's pulled — "drop it and trust it" is how boats drag at 2 a.m.

Prove it before you relax
Cleat the line at the bow, then take two bearings: line up a pair of landmarks abeam — a dock corner against a tree. If they drift apart, you're dragging. A GPS or depth-finder anchor alarm does the same job while you sleep.
How to retrieve an anchor (even a stubborn one)
Motor slowly toward the anchor, taking in line as you go — never let slack drift near the prop. Once the boat is directly over the anchor and the rode is vertical, a short pull breaks the flukes out backward: the anchor spent the whole day resisting a horizontal pull, and a vertical one defeats it easily.

On a slip-ring fluke or a Richter, that release is built into the hardware: the chain rides a ring that slides along the shank, so motoring slowly past the set anchor reverses the pull, the ring runs to the fluke end, and the anchor rolls out backward. No wrestling match at the bow rail.

When one anchor isn't enough
No single anchor works in every situation, so carry two if you have room — preferably different types. Three rigs cover nearly every job.
Bow and stern. One anchor off the bow, one off the stern: the boat holds a fixed position instead of swinging. It's the rig for narrow rivers, tight spots, and crowded sandbars, where boats that don't swing pack closer together — near-universal convention there.
The Bahamian moor. Two anchors off the bow, set 180 degrees apart up-current and down-current, so the boat swings around a central point through tide reversals without dragging either hook — keep both lines snug so neither drifts into the prop.
The beach rig. One bow anchor offshore, a second anchor or spike at the shoreline, and the boat adjusted between them. Never anchor a small boat by the stern alone. The stern is the boat's lowest, heaviest, squarest end — engine, fuel, batteries, usually the people too. Anchored there, current and chop shove against the flat transom instead of the knife of the bow, and can pull the stern low enough for water to come over it and swamp the boat. The bow is shaped to take waves; the transom is shaped to take an engine. A stern anchor as a second anchor, with the bow doing the holding, is standard sandbar practice — a 10 lb mushroom anchor is the classic stern hook.
Anchoring etiquette in a crowded cove
The first boat in sets the precedent — anchoring style and scope — and everyone after matches it, because boats that swing differently end up trading gelcoat. Ask a neighbor where their anchor lies and how much line they have out, and keep about a 7:1-scope distance between boats.
Resist the magnet effect, too: one anchored boat in an empty cove doesn't need company 50 feet away. Tour the anchorage, pick a spot outside everyone's swing circle, do the math for your depth, and lower away.
